LJI reported on the Strategic Plan from SCC on the contents. PGB took report to read.

Leigh and District WI - July 2008

11:23 am

Leigh is a thriving, busy and very friendly institute and we have two more members again this month.
The Taster Day at the WI Denman College in Oxfordshire was a most enjoyable day out and everyone sampled lovely buffet cookery and parchment craft classes.
More exciting outings are being planned.
An evening at Blithfield Hall which includes a tour and then food promises delights as does a trip to Chatsworth on the 15th October for a Flower Arranging evening. Highgrove House is on the agenda for the future as we are now on, albeit the end of, the three-year waiting list.
Our main annual event, the Summer lunch on August 21st at Checkley Village Hall, is already fully subscribed and catering and other arrangements are well under way.
Plans are also well underway for the Denman Delight evening of 25th September where members will present the results of their Denman courses to ‘all interested parties’ as these courses were sponsored by an Awards for All grant.

At this month’s meeting there was a trial of a Loop System for the hard of hearing which was presented by Simone from the Endon Hearing Centre. This appeared to work well and will now be further investigated with a view to having such a system fitted.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by Mr Tim Cockin, author of several books and an encyclopaedia on folklore with particular reference to Staffordshire. It was fascinating to hear about the ghosts, fairies, witches of Staffordshire and special tales such as the use of the scold’s bridal of Marchington and William Palmer poisoner of Rugeley who was hung in 1856 for his crimes.
The evening was brought to a close with the serving of delicious refreshments.

Next Meeting - August 12th – speaker Mr Terry Potter speaking on the topic “Road Safety and Parallel Parking”.
Everyone welcome.
